Tapped Out

As I stare at the wall with a blank expression, drool sliding down my chin, I realize I have no idea what to post on today. My idea well has run dry.

Surely you can think of something to go on and on about, I tell myself. But no. There’s nothing there. My brain is empty. Or almost empty. All I can think about are my revisions and getting those done. That’s a good thing, right?

Any suggestions? What do you do when you’re feeling like your idea well has run dry? Any failsafe brainstorming tricks that get you back on track quick? Sometimes, staring at the wall with a blank expression does work. For me anyway. Just not today. :)

  1. I read other blogs :). Totally serious, here! Either that, or take a nice bath. You can't be brilliant every day, after all.

Also, love the new Halloween decor ;)!

  2. I had no idea what to post about this morning, but then I just thought, Self, it's WIP Wednesday. What problems have you been facing with your WIP?

Then I try to focus on one problem, or one facet of that problem, so I don't overwhelm the post.

It's difficult to post every single day, so I don't always, but I have been trying lately to post as often as I can, at least four times a week.

Just invent a cute anecdote about something one of your kids did and manipulate it into a parable about writing. ;)

  3. I think. And think. And think. And then think some more. Something usually comes. Usually. And if it doesn't, I email my friends in a panic. Yeah, they love me.

  4. I hate it when I can't think of anything to talk about it. There's always reposts, like I did today. :)

  5. I try to write down ideas every week so I have something to work with, but even those are crappy sometimes.

  6. Becca: Thanks! I love Halloween, so I had to do something festive. And what do you mean I can't be brilliant every day? Are you sure? ;D

Tere: I thought about doing a WIP Wed, but I'm so sick of hearing about my WIP, and I'm sure everyone else is too. But, I think you gave me an idea for tomorrow. Woohoo! :D

Elana: Writer friends are awesome, aren't they?

Susan: I didn't even know that was a repost. It goes so nicely with your other recent posts. :)

Natalie: I do that too, but I've been trying to post every day lately and my ideas are running out faster. And you're right, some of them I look at later and think, there's no way I can make a post out of that. But, sometimes it will spur something else.

  7. Had to share this with you:

I'm looking through my google webmaster account and the 12th most common keyword?

    Abby

    Thought you'd like that. ;)

  8. Just googled Google Webmaster--Oh no, Tere! What have you done? More statistics to obsess over!! AAAAH! :D

Okay, so what does that mean? That you just think I'm really cool, or what? Just kidding. Of course that's what it means. ;)

I set up mine (immediately, of course), so I can obsess about it, and it won't give me a list of keywords. And when I click on the "Why not?" link, it says, "Webmaster Tools does some additional data processing - for example, to eliminate duplicates and visits from robots." Robots? And here I thought only people read my blog. ;D Sweet!! Do you think that will help with my scifi platform?

  9. It took several days to establish a list of keywords. Not ot worry. Today was the first time I'd noticed I had keywords since I set up the account last week. Yup, just another thing to obsess over!

  10. Accept your noodle brain and you'll get over it quicker! That's my philosophy anyway. It hasn't worked yet.

  12. On those days, I usually don't blog! :) Other days, I'll be driving around and think of tons of things I should blog about...and then I sit at the keyboard and forget everything I thought of.

  13. Anita: I get some really good ideas in the car too, but if I don't write them down at the stoplight, they're usually gone forever.
